Your notes are yours. Export is built to make leaving easy — that's not a trick, it's the deal. If you ever stop trusting knowdust, you can take everything with you in one click, on any plan, for free, forever.
Export one note
Click the download icon in the top right and choose Export this note (.md). You get the note as a plain markdown file — the exact text you wrote, readable in any text editor on any computer.
Export everything
Same menu, Export everything (.zip) — or the same button in Settings. You get a .zip containing all your notes as .md files, in the same folders you see in the sidebar. Unzip it and it's just a normal folder of text files.
The export includes the unsaved text of the note you're writing right now, so nothing is ever a version behind.
What the export contains — honestly
The .zip holds the current version of every note. It does not include your version history — a portable archive of every version of every note isn't something we offer today, and we'd rather say so here than surprise you. If you need the earlier text of a note before exporting, restore that version first; it becomes the current one (and, remember, restoring never loses the newer text either).
No lock-in, in practice
- Markdown is a plain-text standard — your exported notes open in anything, from Notepad to any other markdown app, with formatting intact.
- Export works on the free plan, over the storage cap, after a refund, always. There is no state in which your notes are held hostage.
- Deleting your account? Export first — the account page walks through it, and the delete flow reminds you.
